Nothing lasts forever; this is especially true when it comes to paper artifacts including letters, postcards, newspapers, and maps. Fortunately, there are simple and effective things you can do to help slow down the deterioration process and prolong the life of these precious relics of the past. An upcoming workshop at the Homestead Museum will provide valuable insight and empower participants with knowledge that can be applied for the benefit of their paper objects.
The beginning of the workshop will focus on the basics of storage, proper handling, how to recognize specific types of damage, and the roles that temperature and humidity play in preservation. Best practices for safely displaying paper will also be shared.
Museum staff will demonstrate how to perform various conservation procedures and invite participants to learn such methods by offering hands-on activities. Procedures include dry document cleaning and tutorials on how to safely flatten rolled up paper and mend tears.
A take-home kit filled with some of the tools used during the day will be provided to each participant. Attendees are encouraged to bring one or two paper objects from their collection for consultation. (Sorry, we cannot provide estimates of value.)
Caring for paper objects is not an overwhelming task! Let us help you learn some simple tricks of the trade. The White Glove Workshop takes place on Saturday, May 16, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. The workshop fee is $25 for adults and $20 for seniors (55+) and students (18+). Class size is limited to 15 people.
