In September 1977, 95-year-old film actress Josephine Marie Workman, granddaughter of Homestead founders William Workman and Nicolasa Urioste, passed away. For decades she’d lived in an apartment in the Silver Lake neighborhood of Los Angeles and, because she was a ward of the State of California, it was assumed that her possessions were thrown away. Imagine our surprise when Juliette Rodriguez called us a couple of weeks ago with the startling news that her grandparents, Baltazar and Juliet Madrid, who owned the complex where Josephine/Mona lived, had saved some of her possessions. Yesterday we picked up some furniture, a steamer trunk, a cedar chest, several film cans (which probably contain long-deteriorated nitrate film), some loose photographs, and three photo albums. It was these latter that proved to be the true treasures unearthed at long last. See our bio for the link to the blog post about this exciting donation.

This is one of the most asked about plants at the Homestead. It’s called acanthus and it was added to our landscape when the museum was undergoing restoration in the 1970s. The leaves of this plant have been featured on the tops of Corinthian columns as far back as the 5th century BC. You can find miniature Corinthian columns in the decorative triptych windows of the Workman House. Come take a look! We’re open for outdoor, self-guided visits Friday-Sunday from 12-4 p.m.

Today's blog post looks at Memorial Day commemorations that took place in greater Los Angeles in 1924. While present-day observations look different in many ways today, so many of the sentiments expressed then still resonate as we remember those who gave their lives in service to their country.

The few dozen pomegranate trees planted around La Casa Nueva in the 1920s are in full bloom. 🤩 Photographs don't do the strikingly bright orange-red flowers justice! Come see them for yourself. We're open for outdoor, self-guided tours Friday-Sunday from 12 to 4 p.m.
